FAQs
The Tilicho Lake + Thorong La Pass route is challenging but doable if you’re well-prepared. It combines two demanding sections of the Annapurna Circuit Trek, making it one of the toughest treks in Nepal due to high altitude, steep climbs, and unpredictable weather.
📍 Manang to Tilicho Base Camp (4,150m)
Rockfall-prone area 😬 – The trail is narrow, with loose rocks.
Steep & tiring ascents – Thin air makes it harder to breathe.
Cold & basic teahouses – Limited accommodation at Tilicho Base Camp.
📍 Tilicho Base Camp to Tilicho Lake (4,919m) & Return
Super steep climb (~900m gain in 3–4 hours).
Frozen & extremely windy in colder months.
No teahouses at Tilicho Lake – Must return to Base Camp.
📍 Thorong Phedi (4,540m) to Thorong La Pass (5,416m) to Muktinath (3,800m)
Most difficult & longest day (8–10 hours) 😓.
Thin air, extreme cold, and strong winds.
2–3 AM start needed to avoid afternoon storms.
Knee-breaking descent to Muktinath (1,600m down in one day!)
The Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake takes approximately 16 days. The timeframe includes rest and acclimatization days to help you adjust to the high altitude. The route can change depending on the weather, fitness level, and personal preferences.
This trek's key features include Tilicho Lake, the Thorang La Pass, the spectacular Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountains, Tibetan-influenced cultures and lifestyles, the iconic Muktinath temple, the hot springs in Tatopani, and a rewarding sunrise hike to Poon Hill for panoramic mountain vistas.
The main difference is the presence of Tilicho Lake. The traditional Annapurna Circuit Trek avoids the detour to Tilicho Lake, focusing instead on Thorong La Pass and the surrounding surroundings. This walk is more exciting and rewarding since it includes Tilicho Lake, a more difficult route, more stunning scenery, and higher altitude.
The height, length, and varied terrain make this walk relatively difficult. While beginners with normal physical fitness and tenacity can complete the trek, prior trekking experience is recommended but not needed.
✅ Good for:
Experienced trekkers who have done high-altitude hikes before.
Physically fit hikers who can walk 6–10 hours a day.
People prepared for extreme weather & basic facilities.
❌ Not ideal for:
Beginners (better to try Annapurna Base Camp or Poon Hill first).
Anyone with altitude issues or knee problems.
Trekker who isn’t used to long, steep climbs.
The height, length, and varied terrain make this walk relatively difficult. While beginners with normal physical fitness and tenacity can complete the trek, prior trekking experience is recommended but not needed.
The weather near Tilicho Lake is erratic, with heavy winds and freezing temperatures. Snow can make the trails hazardous, and significant snowfall might obstruct the route, especially in the winter. You must be prepared for cold temperatures and unexpected weather changes.
Trekking during the monsoon season (June to August) is not recommended owing to excessive rain, leeches, and the possibility of landslides. Winter trekking (December to February) is doable, although snow and freezing weather make it more difficult, particularly when traversing the Thorong La pass. However, we also do this journey throughout the monsoon season and in the winter.
yes, you can see yaks after pissang to yak kharka.
The biggest health hazards are altitude sickness, dehydration, and stomach distress. Proper acclimatization, hydration, and warmth are essential for remaining healthy. Our guide will also explain how to reduce your chances of altitude sickness.
Altitude sickness happens when you ascend to high altitudes too quickly, and your body struggles to adjust to the lower oxygen levels. It usually starts above 2,500m (8,200 ft) and can become severe if not managed properly.
🟡 Mild AMS (Common & Manageable)
Headache 🤕
Dizziness or lightheadedness
Nausea or loss of appetite
Fatigue & difficulty sleeping
Shortness of breath
🔴 Severe AMS (Dangerous – Requires Descent!)
Severe headache (not relieved by medicine)
Vomiting
Confusion & difficulty walking
Shortness of breath even at rest
Blue lips or fingertips (lack of oxygen!)
Acclimatize correctly by gradually increasing your altitude (do not rush). ✅ Stay hydrated with 3-4 liters of water daily. ✅ Consume carbohydrates - High-energy foods help your body adjust. ✅ Avoid drinking and smoking since they dehydrate and exacerbate AMS symptoms. ✅ Take rest days - If you are feeling ill, do not push yourself. ✅ Consider Diamox (Acetazolamide) to avoid AMS (contact a doctor before use). ✅ Listen to your body: If symptoms develop, descend immediately!
In the event of severe altitude sickness or other medical crises, helicopter evacuation is the standard protocol. This is why high-altitude hikes and emergency evacuations require insurance coverage.
We will provide you with three meals per day (breakfast, lunch, and dinner), largely local Nepali and Tibetan cuisine such as dal bhat (lentil soup with rice), noodles, and momo (dumplings). Most teahouses serve western meals such as pasta, pancakes, burgers, sandwiches, and cereal. We recommend that you try dal bhat and tarkari (vegetables), which are energy-dense dishes that you will need on the journey.
1. Meat 🥩 – Not Recommended at Higher Elevations
✅ Available in lower areas.
❌ At higher elevations, meat is not fresh because there are no refrigeration facilities.
Any meat you find has usually been carried up for days by porters/mules, increasing the risk of food poisoning.
If you really want meat, stick to lower altitudes or eat it in Pokhara before/after the trek.
2. Eggs 🥚 – Safe & Good for Energy
✅ Eggs are widely available at teahouses and are safe to eat.
✅ Good source of protein and energy.
✅ Options: Boiled eggs, omelets, scrambled eggs, egg fried rice, egg toast.
💡 Tip: Boiled eggs are the safest choice as they’re cooked at high temperatures.
3. Cheese 🧀 – Okay in Moderation
✅ Cheese is usually available in lower areas and sometimes at High Camp.
✅ Yak cheese is a common option—it’s delicious and high in calories.
❌ Cheese is heavy to digest at high altitudes, so eat in moderation to avoid bloating or discomfort.
✔ Dal Bhat (Rice, lentil soup, and vegetables) – best for stamina
✔ Porridge, muesli, or oats – good breakfast options
✔ Vegetable soup & garlic soup – helps prevent altitude sickness
✔ Boiled potatoes & chapati – easy to digest
✔ Tea (ginger, honey, lemon, mint) – keeps you warm and hydrated
Tap water is unsafe to consume directly. We recommend using water purification tablets before drinking. Though you can buy bottled water at en-route shops, we do not advocate it for environmental reasons. A better solution would be to carry a water bottle and fill it with boiling or filtered water. You can purchase boiled/filtered water from the lodges/tea houses.
✅ Boil the water: The best way to make water safe is by boiling it (usually done at teahouses, often for a small fee – Rs. 50–100).
✅ Water purification tablets/drops: Carry water purification tablets (like ** iodine or chlorine tablets**) or water purification drops to treat water from streams or taps.
✅ Portable filters: You can bring a portable water filter (e.g., SteriPen, Sawyer, or LifeStraw) to purify tap or stream water.
✅ Bottled water: Available in lower altitudes, but it gets more expensive at higher elevations and adds to plastic waste. It’s better to avoid buying too much bottled water.
Drink plenty of water (3–4 liters per day) to prevent dehydration and help with altitude adjustment.
Drink warm tea or herbal drinks (like ginger or lemon tea) at teahouses to stay hydrated.
Avoid alcohol and caffeine at high altitudes as they can dehydrate you.

To obtain an on-arrival visa, you will need a passport valid for at least six months, two passport-sized pictures, and an application fee. The application fee is based on the length of stay. The current pricing is USD 50 per 30-day stay.
